چکیده

The current examples of natural-fiber based polymer composites, because of their biobased and biodegradable properties, offer an alternative as a ‘green’ material available for automotive and other engineering applications. However such composites suffer from low strength and fatigue properties compared to the carbonor glass-fiber based polymer composites. Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), a new type of nanofibers made entirely from cellulose molecules, have very high mechanical properties compared to other natural fibers, even approaching that of inorganic reinforcing fibers. The composites made from cellulose nanofiber films are likely to have very good strength compared to other kinds of biocomposites. However such an assertion about the mechanical properties of composites made from CNF films is yet to be investigated through experiments. This paper presents the results from a crack-propagation test conducted using a double cantilever beam made using two types of resins and reinforcements. The resins used were a traditional epoxy and a bio-based epoxy. For reinforcement, cellulose nanofiber (CNF) films were used. The samples were tested against a reference case made from fiberglass to study and compare crack propagation patterns in the composites. Various crack resistance characteristics are observed in the two systems. The study shows the need to investigate methods for improving the fracture toughness of polymer composites fabricated using CNF films.

Mechanical characterization of cellulose nanofiber and bio-based epoxy composite

Cellulose nanofibers are one class of natural fibers that have resulted in structures with remarkable mechanical properties. In this study, the cellulose nanofibers are used as reinforcements in the forms of layered films in a bio-derived resin. Assessment of swelling behavior is performed together with an assessment of the tension and fracture behavior. Crack resistance behavior is compared to...

An Experimental Study on Toughening Mechanisms of Fillers in Epoxy/ Silica Nanocomposites

In this paper, a systematic study on the effects of particle size and hybrid of two different size of silica nanoparticles on the toughening mechanisms of bisphenol-A epoxy was conducted. Nanosilica particles with mean diameter of 17 nm and 65 nm were blended into epoxy system. Probable synergy effects of these two nanoparticles on Young’s modulus and yield strength have been investigated. ...

Monitoring Damage Propagation in Glass Fiber Composites Using Carbon Nanofibers

In this work, we report the potential use of novel carbon nanofibers (CNFs), dispersed during fabrication of glass fiber composites to monitor damage propagation under static loading. The use of CNFs enables a transformation of the typically non-conductive glass fiber composites into new fiber composites with appreciable electrical conductivity. The percolation limit of CNFs/epoxy nanocomposite...

Fracture and Fatigue Crack Propagation in Graded Composites

The propagation of cracks in graded materials under monotonic and cyclic loading was investigated via experiment and simulation. Graded alumina/epoxy composite specimens exhibiting a variation in composition from 5% to 65% epoxy, representing a twenty-fold variation in Young’s modulus, across a region of width between 6 and 20 mm, were produced by a multistep infiltration technique. Crack initi...
